How to Obtain a COR Certificate?

Before your business can acquire a COR certification, it is essential to have a health and safety management system that adheres to provincial standards.

Step 1: Choose a Certifying Partner

Select a Certifying Partner authorized to manage the COR program for Alberta employers. It's important to pick a Certifying Partner that aligns well with your company's needs and industry specifics.

Step 2: Implement a Health and Safety Management System

Once you've chosen a Certifying Partner, they will assist you in developing a health and safety management system that satisfies their criteria. If your business already has a system in place, your Certifying Partner will offer guidance and training to ensure it meets the required provincial standards.

Step 3: Undergo an Audit

With your health and safety management system ready, the next step is to have it audited. Here’s how to proceed based on your company size:

  • For small employers with fewer than 10 employees, coordinate with your Certifying Partner to perform a self-assessment.
  • For employers with more than 10 employees, work with your Certifying Partner to arrange an external audit.

Obtaining an External Audit

Contact your Certifying Partner to obtain a list of qualified auditors and discuss all necessary audit requirements. Choose an auditor who has the relevant experience and qualifications for your industry. Schedule the audit with the chosen auditor.

Auditors are required to submit the final audit report and supporting documents to their Certifying Partner for a quality assurance review within 21 days of completing the data collection. In special circumstances, Certifying Partners may extend the deadline for report submission up to an additional 24 days. All audit reports must be submitted within 45 days of the completion of data-gathering activities.
